Jerome Angel

Dr. Jerome Angel was born on June 5, 1835, in Union Valley hamlet, Taylor, New York. He was the son of Franklin Angel and Mary Ann (Brooks) Angel. He was educated at the common school in Taylor. He then studied medicine at Geneva Medical College. He practiced medicine in Taylor from 1854 to 1887 and enjoyed an extensive practice. 108      He married Mary Ann (Halbert) Angel on June 10, 1858. They had two kids: Walter H. (b.1864/1865) and Bell (1873).109       In 1886, Jerome Angel was elected to his first term as Town Supervisor of Taylor, New York. It is uncertain what party he was affiliated with during his first term.110 Later in the year, he was nominated as the Prohibition Party candidate for Congress in the 25th congressional district. The Democratic Party also nominated Angel. Angel went up against incumbent Congressman Frank Hiscock. He received 11498 votes and 41.62% of the total vote.111 In 1887, he was elected to his second term as Town Supervisor as a Prohibition Party candidate. He was also reportedly backed by the local Democratic Party.112       Dr. Angel moved to Cortland, New York in 1887. He moved his medical practice to Cortland and continued to practice medicine for the rest of his life. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Cortland.113 He was a member of the Cortland County Medical Society and in 1893 served on their board of censors.       Dr. Jerome Angel died of Apoplexy on September 2, 1896. He was buried in Cortland Rural Cemetery, Cortland, New York.114
