The Prohibition Party Archive at Columbus, Ohio

The Archives/Library division of the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, Ohio contains much material about and/or related to the Prohibition Party. The bulk of the items derive from the former Anti-Saloon League/American Council on Alcohol Problems library at Westerville, Ohio, care of which was entrusted to the Ohio Historical Society in 1974. A major portion of the pre-Repeal documents was microfilmed in 1977, and the film copies can be borrowed through your local library. Originals must be used in the reading room of the Ohio Historical Society.

Copying or directly quoting any of the items is strictly forbidden without the written consent of both the Ohio Historical Society and of the copyright owner.
General information on the Ohio Historical Society can be accessed at the link above or can be obtained by mail from 1982 Velma Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43211.

The Ohio Historical Center, including the library and archives, is located just off the interchange of 17th Avenue with I-71, on the north side of downtown Columbus. Get off I-71 at 17th Avenue, take 17th Avenue west, then Velma Avenue north. The reading room is located on the third floor and is open between 0900 and 1700 hours Tuesday through Saturday (call slips must be turned in by 1615).

Only microfilm copies are circulated, and of these only microfilms of original materials held by the Ohio Historical Society. Borrowers must pay a fee of $3.00 per roll, in advance. Prohibition Party material on microfilm is the same as that available from Bentley Library, bearing in mind that Bentley will circulate only films of originals in its collections, and Ohio will circulate only films of originals in its collection.

Both libraries use the same printed "Guide to the Microfilm Edition of Temperance and Prohibition Papers," copies of which will be sent upon request. Ohio, in addition, will provide photocopies of its manual card catalog entries under "Prohibition Party" (currently, there are 18).

Very limited research assistance will be given by mail, for $5.00 ($5.29 for Ohio residents) plus copying fees. The library will provide a list of professional researchers to persons needing extensive help.
