Kittel HalvorsenKittel Halvorsen was elected to Congress in 1890, on the Prohibition ticket (Dubin says he was elected as a "Populist," but the original ballot says "Prohibition" -- telephone call to Minnesota Historical Society, 7 May 2001). The Prohibition Party claims some of the responsibility for electing Kittel Halvorsen to Congress. Halvorsen, a native of Telemarken, Norway, emigrated with his parents to The United States in 1848. They settled in Minnesota, where Halvorsen engaged in farming and cattle-breeding, and where he held several local offices. He was a member of the Minnesota House in 1886-88. -- Gammon, 2007, pp.48-49 |
