Prohibition National Committee secretary Leroy Pletten, of Sterling Heights, ran for his local school board, the Utica District in Macomb County, at the municipal election on June 9, 2003. He came in 5th in a field of five, getting 160 votes out of 2848 cast (5.8%). The two incumbents were re-elected to the two open seats. There are 109,194 registered voters in this school district, for an election turn-out of 2.6%. Pletten points out that the winners were elected by about 1% of the eligible voters. If there had been a thousand Prohibition voters in this district, the Prohibition Party would have won both seats on this school board. (School board candidates in Michigan run as "non-political" candidates, with no party name on the ballot, but the point remains that Prohibition Party members could have won.) |
