Jarvis S. Church |
Born in Springboro, Crawford County, Pennsylvania in 1830, Jarvis Servetus Church gained the rudiments of education in the common schools of Pennsylvania and afterword attended Kingsville Academy in Ashtabula County, Ohio and Oberlin College, leaving the later before graduation in the summer of 1853. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in Waterloo, Iowa in 1857 and commenced to practice in Mason City, Iowa where he moved in 1855. There he was a prosecuting attorney, county judge and superintendent of public schools. During the civil war he was commissioned by the provost marshal to keep the quota of men called for by the president up to the standard in Worth, Winnebago and Cerro Gordo counties in Iowa. In 1866 he moved to Brownville, Nebraska. In 1869 he was a representative in the state legislature and served in the 5th, 6th and 7th sessions (1869-1871). He was Mayor of Brownville for one term and county judge for 10 years. For 4 years he was President of the Southeastern Nebraska Building and loan Association of Auburn and for 3 years, Editor of the Brownville Advertiser. Judge Church died in 1905. [BACK] |
