David Livingston
David Livingston was born in Galena, Kansas on 5 March 1940.
He attended the University of Kansas, but stopped short of graduation in order to be a Peace Corps volunteer. He took Peace Corps training at the University of Pittsburgh in 1962, one of 130 individuals in the first "class" of Liberia volunteers. Of those, he was among the 120 who finished the course and among the 99 who completed their two-year assignment.
Returning stateside, he finished his ROTC studies at Kansas and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army. He was assigned to the 1st Infantry division in Viet-Nam, then to the 81st Artillery division in Germany, then returned to Fort Hood, Texas to train as a helicopter pilot. After completing that training, he was sent to Viet-Nam a second time, now as a captain leading an Aero-Scout platoon of 10 OH-6 helicopters.
He sustained a major head injury during combat on 22 January 1970 and was shipped home on 100% disability -- one of 23,214 Viet-Nam veterans who were awarded 100%.
Livingston earned an AA degree in accounting from the Community College of Denver, but was unable to do well because of his injury. He then opened a gun shop, but after three and one-half years decided that was too risky a business for someone as battered as himself.
