Jonathan Makeley

Jonathan Makeley is a historian, with a focus on American reform movements (particularly the American temperance prohibition movements), and a Prohibition Party activist. Makeley was born on September 3rd, 1995. He grew up in Angelica, New York. He has a B.A. in History from Alfred University, and an M.A. History from the University at Buffalo.

Makeley has served as the town historian of Angelica, New York since 2017. His historical writings include “Enlightenment and Sure Remedy: The Development of Ethics, Thought, and Activism of the 19th Century Temperance Movement in the Western New York”, “Claiming the State for the Public Welfare: The Establishment of the First Period of Statewide Prohibition in New York State”, the introduction to the 2017 reprint of Temperance Facts by W.G. Calderwood, numerous biographic articles on prohibition party figures, and various papers on local history, temperance, and abolitionism.

In 2017, Makeley helped to reestablish the state level organization of the Prohibition Party in New York, and has served as the state chairman in New York since 2018. In 2018, he ran as a Prohibition Party candidate for state assembly in New York’s 146th district. In April 2019, he became the latest national secretary of the Prohibition Party.

Makeley is the editor and main writer of the New York Prohibitionist, the monthly newspaper of the Prohibition Party of New York. He is also a contributing writer for the Independent Political Report.
